Preventing Tooth Decay To Maintain Healthy Teeth

Ways That Your Dentist Can Reduce Your Mouth Pain

If you have ever experienced oral discomfort, you likely know how intense mouth pain can be. Still, your dentist can treat a number of uncomfortable mouth conditions.

Here are a few ways that a dentist can reduce your mouth pain.

Root Canal Therapy

If you experience chronic dental sensitivity or have a tooth infection, your dentist may prescribe root canal therapy. During the procedure, the dentist removes the pulp from the interior of the tooth.

Your teeth consist of three layers: the enamel, the dentin, and the pulp. The pulp, which is the innermost layer of the tooth, is soft and contains the blood vessels and nerves of the tooth.

Once the pulp becomes inflamed by trauma or an infection, the dental nerves also become inflamed. This inflammation may irreparably damage the nerves, leaving you with chronic pain.

However, when the nerves are removed during a root canal procedure, the pain is alleviated. Once the pulp is excised, to protect the tooth and provide structural support, the dentist fills the tooth and covers it with a dental crown.

Dental Crowns

In some cases, painful dental sensitivity is caused by the wearing away of the enamel that covers a tooth. Once the underlying dentin is exposed, environmental factors, such as temperature changes, can more readily aggravate sensitive nerves.

The dentin contains tubules, or tiny tunnels, which grant access to the dental nerves. A dental crown can effectively cover and protect a tooth, preventing the nerves' direct exposure to cold and heat. Since a crown surrounds the entire natural crown of a tooth, the entire tooth surface that is uncovered by the gums is protected.

Bonding Material

Sometimes, only a small area of tooth enamel is breached. The breach could occur because of enamel erosion or a small chip or crack. Still, even a small breach in the tooth enamel can incite painful dental sensitivity. To relieve the discomfort, the dentist may apply a bit of dental bonding material.

Dental bonding material is a soft plastic or resin that can be placed on an area of a tooth that needs to be covered. Once the bonding substance is properly positioned, it is hardened into place using a special light. The hardened resin replaces the damaged or missing enamel to alleviate the dental sensitivity.
